Welcome!
I purchased these pickups because I was looking for some Hi-Fi pickups that would be very expressive, clear, and true to my playing. I find these pickups to fit that bill. They really do have a huge dynamic range and are just very clear overall. I've been finding them exceptional for playing math rock and midwest emo which have a lot of tapping in playing and chime-y/sparkly tone that's characteristic of the genre. The bridge pickup with the copper plate is also a really cool take, and I'm thinking of adding a pickup config for neck + bridge for tele-like tones because of it. Overall, these pickups won't intrude on your playing and also won't add much to it either in terms of color, which is the biggest selling point of these pickups to me.
You may actually feel and find yourself in the same position I have been for many years. An inspiring guitar to play but with disappointing guitar tones and EQ. I have a PRS Starla SE that's truly an amazing guitar that can compete with higher cost guitars in my collection like Gibson Custom, Heritage, and other premium instruments. While the stock pickups did work to record some demos, I liked the guitar so much that I wanted to also use it live. This started a humbucker pickups buy and sell phase that took over 9+ humbucker sets to get it right. Something was always bad in the process... Heavily compressed, plastic sounding pickup, clear but missing bass, totally weak, muddy, scooped, cold, dark, held back, unnatural. The list goes on. I can tell you I own and use pickups from the different famous North American brands. While some may have worked or work on other guitars, all of them failed on this particular guitar. I tried even a Canadian brand of boutique pickups to see if something international could get it right. Negative! I considered European & UK located brands, but before I went that route, I read about Brickhouse Toneworks pickups. I located this website, read social media posts, found videos on YouTube from rockfnrol, Visual Guy and even Zach Broyles from High Voltage Guitars & Mythos Pedals fame talking about the 1960 P.A.F. from Brickhouse Toneworks. While I do like Alnico II on Les Paul style guitars, it's a disaster on this particular PRS Starla SE, but an Alnico IV set was created by Mr. David Shepherd. After a negative experience with 9.75K Alnico IV pickup set and then a positive Alnico IV experience with a 7.86K Alnico IV bridge,I knew low output Alnico IV was going to be the right path. I learned this after 9+ pickup sets to get it right across 6 years of experimenting, resulting in wasted time and money funds.
David Shepherd offered an Alnico IV bridge at 8.1K (based on website specs). I certainly knew that my previous pickup certainly needed a push more to get to my world of high gain tones. I placed the purchase around Thanksgiving/Black Friday 2025 time, opening it up on Christmas Day, and installing it yesterday. I have finally FOUND the tone this PRS guitar needed! It doesn't fail at any moment! Clean? Done! Break-up? Done! High gain tones? Without a sweat! Clarity, harmonics, force, excellently EQ'd. All that you need is here. I actually wanted to reach out to David Shepherd to thank him for this. He finally resolved the issue this guitar had once and for all. This pickup set will forever remain in my guitar.
Something extra I would like to add as a new Brickhouse Toneworks owner and user is the excellent customer service and human being David Shepherd, the founder and pickup winder is. I asked for a short leg, 4-conductor variation of the Mason Deluxe P.A.F. set for this Starla SE. He messaged me it was possible. This was before the options appeared on the website and now they're openly available for all of us.
Just wanted to thank David publicly for his service, attention to detail, passion and the high quality of his product. It can even be seen in the quality of the packaging, presentation, and the personal touches he adds. It's an honor to do with business with an individual and company like Brickhouse Toneworks. I'll be back for more and will look forward to owning the next pickups being launched to the market in the future.
My guitar tech said that Brickhouse Toneworks just needs someone that can spread the word and tone of Brickhouse Toneworks pickups so that the brand gets the worldwide ''BOOM'' it needs. Don't wait until that happens and get on the train now! I'll happily use these pickups and promote this brand! It feels good to support business by humble, professional and passionate individuals that can truly deliver!
Don't be afraid and purchase this Mason Deluxe P.A.F. set! It truly works nicely on a full mahogany PRS! Clean, overdriven and high gain tones are all here! Don't be afraid of them being unpotted! There's nothing to fear here! Buy safely!
I will start this review with the SG wiring harness from Brickhouse.
None of my many guitars have the volume and tonal response that my SG has now.
Pickups are always subjective and loaded with voodoo that sometimes comes true.
My SG never sounded better !
I had a set of these soapbar P90’s installed in my Epiphone P90 LP yesterday. The stock pickups sounded great (or so I thought) and weren’t terribly noisy. However they did get a little muddy with gain. Having already had a set of Brickhouse Mason Deluxe PAF’s installed in one of my guitars and one of their dog ear P90’s in another, I decided to give these a shot. Oh my goodness! These sound great! They clean up beautifully when you roll down the volume and they handle gain with aplomb. No muddiness here. Just P90 greatness! They aren’t entirely noiseless in my setup but they are pretty darn quiet. And what little noise there is can be easily silenced with the noise filter on my multi effects pedalboard. I have a set of Brickhouse 1960 PAFs and a set of the noiseless humbucker sized P90’s to install yet, and I have no doubt they will be fantastic, too. David’s service is top notch as well! I highly recommend Brickhouse Toneworks products!
I have been looking for a Precision pickup that gave me "that tone in my head"
In a conversation with David I explained what I was looking for..likes, dislikes, etc...
He delivered a PJ set (and a custom passive harness!) that checked all the boxes.
They complement each other and give me "that tone" I've been looking for.
The tone and quality of build is unsurpassed.
Getting ready to take possession of my second P!!!
I was starting to think I just didn't like Humbuckers. I tried sets from 3 different companies and kept feeling disappointed with tones and dynamics. I eventually put a set of Humbucker sized BH90s from Brickhouse in there and fell in love with the P90 tone. When these Mason PAFs dropped I took shot and tried another set of PAFs. These ARE the pickups I've always wanted. Perfect balance of compression and dynamics. They have that perfect Telecaster on steroids tone. Not muddy. Not shrill. Amazing for clean but stunning for medium to high gain tones. Draw dropping for driving a tube amp. My search is over. The Mason PAFs are the real deal. Thank you Brickhouse!!
The pickups in my American PBass started cutting out randomly so I decided to try a set of these. I use flat wound string on my PBass so I'm not going for a hi fi sound. I didn't really expect there to be much of a difference between my stock pickups on these Brickhouse pickups. But these pickups sound killer!! The low end is more defined. Less flub/mud in the note. Great punch! And the high frequencies come through better, creating more balance compared to the stock pickups. They sit extremely well in a mix. I'm an instant fan of Brickhouse Toneworks. A+ job. Thank you!
Perfect setup to drop in and solder. This eas my fist soldering job and it was super easy. Love Brickhouse gear. Also my guitar sounds incredible and so much different than it did before. If you are considering working on your guitar and never have, this is the perfect starter set up. Great customer service too
David’s work is the absolute best! Buy with genuine confidence!
I play blues, old rock'n'roll, SURF, smooth jazz, classic country... It's quiet and has the PERFECT blend of smooth creamy upper mids, a breath of fresh air from the thin and jangly bridge pickup that was on my Strat... I've played well over 10,000 gigs in 54+ years, and TONE and RESPONSE are everything. I'm getting her pinstriped this weekend ! Nice job, David....
This was super plug-in play, packaged extremely well, came with a great diagram. I actually called the number and got some customer service response. That was incredible and very helpful. The change that I did to my Guitar is insurmountable. This is my first attempt at any kind of soldering on a guitar or anything else and it came out perfect.
I'm really happy with the new set of BT pickups. Great tone and almost noiseless. Don't get me wrong, because there's no such thing as "noiseless"; unless we are talking about active pickups. When looking for a real P90 tone, hum and noise are part of the deal. This new set removed the annoying hum, and what's left of noise is manageable with a good noise gate.
Definitively not going to miss the original Gibson pickups of my Les Paul Special.
Important to mention that David deserves 5 stars when it comes to customers service.
I love the aggressive bite of P90s however I play a lot of high gain, specifically stoner/doom rock. The noise and hum from standard P90s made them almost unusable for that style of music.
So I did a lot of research and stumbled upon a YouTube short for Brickhouse noiseless P90s. I took a chance and purchased a pair and I’m so happy that I did. They sound fantastic! Loud, powerful, aggressive with all the bite but none of the noise.
I highly recommend the Brickhouse noiseless P90s for anyone that wants that signature soap bar pickup tone without any of the unwanted noise.
I've been playing for 60 years and I've always loved the sound of a good P90. Unfortunately, they just have that inherent hum. While on the web one day, I ran into a post on a forum about David Shepherd and his BrickHouse pickups. I contacted David about his BH90S Pickups and he gave me some great info. I ordered a set for My Gibson CS 1960 Special DC and he got them shipped out in a couple of days. When they arrived, I installed them in the guitar and proceeded to test them out. I was absolutely FLABBERGASTED with the sound of these pickups. All the sound and tone of the OEM's but NO NOISE! Actually, the BH90's are louder and they do spec out higher than the A5 stock Gibson's. These pickups will allow me to use my much lighter Special more because as an old guy, 9 pound Les Paul's really beat you up on gigs. If you are looking for the should and tone of a P90 WITHOUT that dreaded hum, Try a set of Dave's BH90S pickups. You won't be disappointed !!!
I recently purchased the BH 90 for a Junior LP project. What a blessing! After pouring through weeks of video’s, reviews, and reaching out to various Tech’s it became clear that the BH 90 was the go to pickup for my application. All the vintage look and legendary tone without the oppressive hum that presents issues in the studio. Swift shipping, helpful customer service, and a thoughtful personal note from the owner. The customer experience just doesn’t get any better than that!
You can count on these folks to do the same for you.
