Can You Replace Humbuckers With P-90s?
Love your humbucker equipped guitar but wish it had more bite, clearer chords, or a more raw and open sound? A humbucker-sized P-90 may be the upgrade you’re looking for.
Yes, you can replace standard humbuckers with humbucker-sized P-90s. Traditional soapbar and dogear P-90s have different dimensions and mounting arrangements, so they aren’t direct replacements for guitars routed for humbuckers.
Here’s what to consider before making the swap.
Check the Fit First
A humbucker-sized pickup is designed for a standard humbucker route, but mounting details still matter. Check:
- Cavity depth, including clearance for mounting legs and wiring.
- Mounting method, whether the pickup attaches to a ring, pickguard, or guitar body.
- Wiring connections, especially if your guitar uses a solderless connector system.

Choose by Sound, Not Just Specifications
Start with what you want to change. “Clearer neck-position chords” or “more bite without harsh highs” tells us more than “better tone.”
The Brickhouse BH-90 is designed to bring that vintage P-90 character with clarity, punchy mids, and a raw top end P-90 response into a humbucker-sized format, with the benefit of hum cancellation.
When listening to demos, pay attention to chord definition, picking dynamics, and how the sound cleans up with the volume control. Those qualities tell you more than a resistance reading alone.
Why the BH-90’s Resistance Reading Can Be Misleading
The BH-90 averages approximately 10k in the neck and 11k in the bridge. Those numbers can suggest higher output when compared with traditional P-90s, but its really just the hum-canceling construction that produces a higher DCR reading.
Its true output is comparable to a vintage single coil P-90 measuring roughly 7–9k. DC resistance isn’t a reliable output rating, particularly when comparing different pickup designs.
Check Your Electronics
For the BH-90, we recommend 500k pots and a .022µF tone capacitor. Your guitar may already have suitable components, so check before replacing them.
Physical fit also doesn’t mean solderless installation. Make sure the wiring suits your guitar, and use a good technician that you trust if needed.
Is the BH-90 Right for You?
If you want P-90 character in your humbucker-equipped guitar without single coil pickup hum, the BH-90 is worth hearing.
